Artifact: Bronze Sword Location Discovered: Hebron Date: 2000 - 1500 B.C. Material: Bronze Total Length: 20.25 inches Blade Length: 15 inches |
This sword was unearthed in Hebron, a city roughly twenty miles south of Jerusalem, and has been dated to the Middle Bronze Age, between 2000 and 1500 B.C. The Bronze Age found new ways to refine metal, leading to sturdier weapons that could handle more wear and tear (1). This sword features a defined midrib, a ridge running the length of the middle of the blade which gave the sword added strength.
This bronze sword is typical of those used throughout Canaan during the time of the Patriarchs. Swords such as this one were likely used by the Canaanite warriors who fought in the Battle of Siddim, recorded in Genesis 14. This type of sword could have been used as both a thrusting and cutting weapon.
